Soshu Shigeru Oyama
Soshu Shigeru Oyama was born in Tokyo on
July 7th, 1935. After beginning the study of karate at an early age and
attending Japan University, he became a professional karate master, having
trained with and under Mas Oyama during the early days of the development of
Kyokushin.
In 1967, the then Saiko Shihan
came to White Plains, New-York. Recognized as the top Japanese karate master
and an international authority on Kyokushin karate, he was selected to
introduce traditional Japanese karate adapted to a modern system to American
students. All worldwide Kyokushin champions subsequently traveled to
New-York to train under his tutelage, coming from Japan and Europe, as well
as throughout the US. In addition to his teaching and mentoring duties,
Shigeru Oyama has written three volumes on karate, including the
prize-winning novel U.S. Karate Adventure. He is the current chairman of
World Oyama Karate, which became and independent organization in 1981 and
which is headquartered in New-York City. In October 1985, he received a
citation for professional excellence presented by President Ronald Reagan at
the Whitehouse. Soshu is a 10th dan black belt, with over 50
years of martial arts experience. Soshu Oyama has been training students in the
United States for thirty years. He has fought the legendary 100-man Kumite
winning 100 consecutive bouts with black belt opponents in a single day. He has
shown the power of his Karate in awe-inspiring demonstrations, breaking over
1000 pounds of ice with a single strike and stopping a razor sharp sword with
his bare hands. Soshu Oyama has rained many champions for international
full-contact tournaments, and is highly regarded in martial arts circles
worldwide. |

Working near his home in New-York, Soshu S.
Oyama oversees more than 200 dojos across the United States, Canada and other
parts of the world. He trains a team of American fighters who participate in
various competitions in Japan, Europe, and North America. He ensures the
high-level of training given by the individual schools, all over the world.

Message
Karate is like climbing a mountain. Life, too, is like climbing a mountain. It
is important to try hard to reach the top at your own pace. Once you are on top,
you can look all around. If you stay at the bottom, you can only look up.
