Soshu Shigeru Oyama

Soshu Shigeru Oyama was born in Tokyo on July 7th, 1935. After beginning the study of karate at an early age and attending Japan University, he became a professional karate master, having trained with and under Mas Oyama during the early days of the development of Kyokushin.

In 1967, the then Saiko Shihan came to White Plains, New-York. Recognized as the top Japanese karate master and an international authority on Kyokushin karate, he was selected to introduce traditional Japanese karate adapted to a modern system to American students. All worldwide Kyokushin champions subsequently traveled to New-York to train under his tutelage, coming from Japan and Europe, as well as throughout the US. In addition to his teaching and mentoring duties, Shigeru Oyama has written three volumes on karate, including the prize-winning novel U.S. Karate Adventure. He is the current chairman of World Oyama Karate, which became and independent organization in 1981 and which is headquartered in New-York City. In October 1985, he received a citation for professional excellence presented by President Ronald Reagan at the Whitehouse.

He has fought the legendary 100-man Kumite winning 100 consecutive bouts with black belt opponents in a single day. He has shown the power of his Karate in awe-inspiring demonstrations, breaking over 1000 pounds of ice with a single strike and stopping a razor sharp sword with his bare hands. Soshu Oyama has rained many champions for international full-contact tournaments, and is highly regarded in martial arts circles worldwide.

Working near his home in New-York, Soshu S. Oyama oversees more than 200 dojos across the United States, Canada and other parts of the world. He trains a team of American fighters who participate in various competitions in Japan, Europe, and North America. He ensures the high-level of training given by the individual schools, all over the world.

Soshu Shigeru Oyama's Message

Karate is like climbing a mountain. Life, too, is like climbing a mountain. It is important to try hard to reach the top at your own pace. Once you are on top, you can look all around. If you stay at the bottom, you can only look up.
